They Followed God—and It Saved Her Life

Following what they believed was God’s call to Oklahoma, one pastoral family made a routine decision that led to a life-saving cancer diagnosis.

Before Abraham Guerrero received a call to pastor the Midwest City  and Lakeside Spanish Seventh-day Adventist churches in Oklahoma, he and his wife had already said yes to God. What they didn’t know is that their willingness to follow God’s leading would lead to a life-saving discovery

As a young pastor, Guerrero made a bargain with God: he could decline any verbal job offers, but a written invitation would be his cue to move. Before marrying Natalia, he told her about the arrangement, and she agreed.

Following God’s leading, the Colombian couple served nine years in Florida and 3½ years in the South Atlantic Conference. During that time, Guerrero received multiple invitations to serve elsewhere—but he turned them all down. Each one had been verbal.

Then one week, Luis Prieto, Hispanic ministries director for the Oklahoma Conference, visited Guerrero’s church. That night, Prieto couldn’t sleep, feeling impressed that he needed to invite Guerrero to Oklahoma. When he extended the invitation, Guerrero declined, just as he had the others.

What Guerrero didn’t realize was that Prieto quietly moved forward with a formal written call, properly approved by all committees

When the letter arrived, everything changed.

Natalia didn’t hesitate. “Okay, we gotta go,” she said. She had never even heard of Oklahoma, but she didn’t ask where it was or look at a map. She simply prepared to follow what they believed was God’s call.

Before relocating, however, Natalia suggested they complete a full medical workup, uncertain what access to care might look like where they were going.. That decision revealed something neither of them expected: she had Stage 3 colon cancer.

“There were no warning signs,” Guerrero said. “Nothing. We cried like crazy.”

Even as the family moved to Oklahoma, Natalia began treatment.

Ten months later, as the Midwest City Spanish church prepared to move into a larger facility, Natalia’s doctor delivered unexpected news—she was cancer-free.

“Had we not been obedient, I can almost assure you that she would have been dead by now,” Guerrero said. “God saved my wife’s life.”
