Machine Learning Certificate Builds AI Skills

Machine learning powers everything from recommendation engines to fraud detection, making it one of today's fastest-growing technology fields. Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) is preparing students to enter the field through a new Machine Learning Certificate.

Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that enables computer systems to learn patterns from data and improve their performance over time. Using algorithms, machine learning models identify relationships in data to make predictions, support decisions, and generate content.

Students in the certificate program learn core concepts, implementing and interpreting algorithms, analyzing data, and evaluating model performance. Students learn to understand and apply data-driven methods in an increasingly digital, technology-driven world.

Designed to fit within existing degree plans, the certificate allows students to earn an additional credential without delaying graduation.

The Machine Learning Certificate consists of three courses totaling nine credit hours. Participants also complete a capstone project that applies their skills to a real-world problem, demonstrating their ability to analyze data, implement appropriate models, and interpret results.

Required courses include “Computing as a Human Endeavor,” “Data Analysis,” and “Introduction to Machine Learning.”

The certificate reflects SWAU's commitment to providing a Christ-centered, mission-driven education. Graduates gain strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills, equipping them to make a faith-based impact across diverse, data-driven technology professions.
