Global Studies Certificate Broadens Perspectives

Understanding different cultures and worldviews is becoming increasingly important in today's interconnected world. Southwestern Adventist University is helping students develop those skills through a new Global Studies Certificate.

The certificate complements students' degree programs by building proficiency in global literacy and cross-cultural communication while developing analytical skills applicable to global systems. Areas of focus include cultural diversity, worldviews and politics, and meaningful engagement in cross-cultural contexts.

Students can earn the Global Studies Certificate alongside their bachelor's degree by selecting an appropriately aligned major and electives, allowing them to complete the program without extending time to graduation.

The Global Studies Certificate consists of five courses—three required courses and two approved electives—for a total of 13 credit hours. Participants also complete a two-week experiential learning component, such as study abroad, international service learning, a related internship, or another global learning experience.

Required courses include “International Relations,” “World Civilization,” and “Introduction to Global Missions.” Electives options include courses in peace and conflict, environmental stewardship, global development and economy, human rights and social justice, and international politics.

The certificate reflects SWAU's commitment to providing a Christ-centered, mission-driven education while preparing graduates to serve wherever they are called—locally, nationally, or internationally.
