This summer, Ozark Adventist Academy installed a new integrated Ubiquiti security system that combines electronic door access, intercom communication, and surveillance cameras.
The system now requires key card entry at 11 building entrances across campus, and all the entrances can be viewed with security cameras built directly into the key card readers. Visitors will now need to use an intercom built into the readers to request entrance into the administration building, music hall, gymnasium, cafeteria, and dormitories. This modern intercom system offers a significant upgrade from its 1980s predecessor.
Visitors swiping up on the blue icon will cause the app-based system to dial the mobile phone numbers of a designated Ozark employee, who can then unlock the door remotely, even if they're not physically on campus. With cameras built into the key card readers and additional cameras installed across campus, staff can also see exactly who is requesting entrance.
The electronic door access and intercom system were purchased through a grant from the state of Arkansas. Ozark also purchased 26 interior and exterior security cameras to integrate into the system with funds from private donors. Some of the new cameras have a fixed view, and others can pan and zoom across campus. All of the new cameras, both those built into the key card as well as pre-existing cameras, can now be viewed and controlled through the highly customizable app-based software.
Ozark now has approximately 60 cameras connected to a network video recorder. Video from the cameras is stored on the network video recorder and can be viewed by those with appropriate permissions. Currently seven Ozark employees have full access to the camera system. The boys' and girls' deans also have limited access and can view the cameras associated with their respective dormitories. The system can also allow school resource officers at the Gentry Police Department to view video from the cameras in real time.
"There was a need to have video coverage of the hallways and exterior areas for the safety of our students and campus," says Vice Principal Travis Irish, whose responsibilities include campus safety and security. "The system also provides asset protection, but its primary purpose is to maintain the safety and security of the campus and grounds."
