It was an October day, and I was driving home from an appointment with a surgeon who had informed me that I had cancer. I was devastated. Members of my family had died from different cancers, and thoughts raced through my mind about everything that could happen.

As I drove, I prayed aloud, asking God to reassure me that things would be okay.

Some time earlier, I had recorded hundreds of songs on two thumb drives—one featuring spiritual music, and the other containing 415 favorites from the 1970s. On the drive home, I turned on the 1970s collection, and song No. 390 began to play.

It was “A Mighty Fortress” by The King’s Heralds.

“And though this world, with devils filled,

Should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear, for God hath willed

His truth to triumph through us.”

Tears dampened my face as I pulled over. That spiritual song should not have been on the thumb drive filled with my 1970s favorites, but how it ended up there is not a mystery to me. It was the song I needed at that moment, and the reassurance that God was with me came over me like a warm blanket.

Later, I met with a medical team specializing in cancer. After conducting and reviewing several tests, the team told me that my prognosis was good and that I had a strong chance of becoming cancer-free.

Regardless of the outcome, I entered surgery with a sense of peace, knowing I was in God’s hands. I continue to claim the words of “A Mighty Fortress” every day.
